“在吊车上五天五夜, 我也动摇过”(英文)

“Working on the crane for five days and nights nonstop, I almost wavered”

On January 23rd, in modelling itself after Beijing Xiaotangshan Hospital, the Wuhan municipal government decided to construct a hospital named Huoshenshan (literally: Mount of the God of Fire) Hospital in Wuhan to focus exclusively on treating COVID-19 patients. Two days later on January 25th, the Wuhan government decided to construct another hospital named Leishenshan (literally: Mount of the God of Lightning and Thunder) Hospital in Wuhan within two weeks.

It was the Spring Festival holiday season, and yet more than 1,400 construction workers sacrificed their holiday and started the project immediately. However, there was still a lack of helping hands for these huge construction projects. A call was issued and hundreds of people from all directions enthusiastically responded. Cheng Tianhong, a crane driver, was one of these people. “At that time, my wife, out of her concern for my safety, kept telling me not to go, but I came here anyway. As a resident in Wuhan, how could I flinch at this critical moment?”

More and more people like Cheng Tianhong joined forces in constructing the hospitals. The team grew big quickly: 800 … 1,000 … 2,000 … 5,000 people on the construction site.

Cold though the winter was in Wuhan, the Huoshenshan area, close to the Zhiyin Lake, turned out to be a “hot” and hopeful construction site.

Cheng Tianhong’s job was to operate a heavy crane. He was so diligent that he did not leave the crane for one single day for fie consecutive days. When he was utterly exhausted, he would take some sleep on the crane and then continue to work. Likewise, thousands of construction workers kept working 24-hour shifts on thousands of large-scale machinery and transporting vehicles.

During the busiest time, there were more than 7,000 people working on the construction site, operating more than 800 excavators, bulldozers and other construction equipment at the same time.

It took only ten days and nights to build Huoshenshan Hospital, one for respiratory infectious diseases, with a total floor area of 34,000 square meters and a capacity of 1,000 patient beds. It has become a new landmark in China’s determined fight against the epidemic.

“To be honest, I once wavered, seeing the contagious patients were transferred here. But I decided to continue the work for three more days. When I saw that these patients had a better place to stay in, I had a sense of fulfillment. After all, our painstaking efforts paid off,” said Cheng Tianhong.
