Four new Super Post Panamax(巴拿马运河大型船)ship-to-shore cranes arrived at the Port of Savannah’s Garden City Terminal（集散站）on Monday bringing the total number of cranes at the port to 26, more than any other terminal( 集散站)in the U.S.

The crane capacityis part of several projects undertaken by the port of Savannah to accommodate larger vessels coming through the expanded Panama Canal. The portis also in the middle of its Savannah Harbor Expansion Project (SHEP) that involves deepening the inner harbor to 47 feet and the outer harbor to 49feet at mean low water.

Over the same period, the Portof Savannah has seen a 21 percent increase in the number of TEUs handled pervessel.”

巴拿马运河的扩建

早在1930年代，就有人提议为巴拿马运河建造新的船闸，来解决拥挤的问题和大型船只通过的问题。在2006年10月22日，巴拿马运河管理局组织了一次关于巴拿马运河扩建的全民公投，结果扩建计划获得了78%的选民的普遍的支持。

当地时间2016年6月26日，历时10年的巴拿马运河扩建工程正式竣工，通航仪式于巴拿马阿瓜克拉拉船闸处举行。中国远洋海运集团旗下的“中远海运巴拿马”号货轮成为运河扩建后首航船只。

这是运河建成102年历史以来的最大规模扩建。扩建后的新船闸长427米、宽55米、深18.3米，比此前的老船闸加长40%、加宽64%。
